Born and educated in St. Helens, Dorothy has also spent the whole of her working life locally, first in the Borough Treasurer's Office, then at Pilkington Glass Head Office. As a mature student, she gained her D.E.S Teaching certificate, followed by an Honours Degree in Music and a second degree in Mathematics!
Dorothy was appointed Head of Music at Notre Dame Girls' Grammar school in 1972, teaching pupils from beginners through to A Level. When the school changed its status in the late 1980s to become De La Salle High school, Dorothy remained as Head of Music until her retirement from full-time teaching in 1998. Post-retirement she has continued to work part-time at Carmel Sixth Form College.
Dorothy is an extremely busy accompanist who, in addition to her work with Pilkington Choir, is also Accompanist to St. Helens Amateur Operatic Society, St. Helens Singers. She also “accompanies” music students for Associated Board Music exams and A level exam recitals. She is a very busy church organist and Cantor, serving two parishes each week and often being called upon by various other churches in and around St. Helens for special occasions, funerals, weddings etc.
As Accompanist, Dorothy is quite happy to give solo performances but says she much prefers the dynamic of accompaniment work. She has established an extremely close working relationship with Conductor Anne, being quite happy to act as chorus master(mistress?) when one of the choir sections is struggling with notes. She also runs our voice warm up sessions before we start rehearsals. This is challenging but has proved very beneficial to choir members.
Dorothy is an accomplished composer in her own right and has gifted several of her compositions to the Choir.
Interestingly Dorothy's membership of the Pilkington Choir goes back along way, having joined initially as a young chorister from 1957-62 before developing her musical interests elsewhere.
We are delighted that she rejoined the choir in 2003 as Accompanist bringing such a wealth of musical experience.
